Half of Inspected Belgian Websites Failed on Identity Alone

The FPS Economy checked 2,158 websites and web pages for the legally required company details. Almost half of them — 1,030, or 47.7% — did not provide the required information identifying the service provider, and 45.7% omitted the ondernemingsnummer entirely, which the regulator describes as a fundamental breach. That is not a fringe compliance topic; it is close to a coin flip across the Belgian web. The required set: company name exactly as registered in the Kruispuntbank van Ondernemingen, establishment address, working contact details, the ondernemingsnummer, and the VAT number where you are VAT-liable. Companies add legal form, registered office and the competent enterprise court. Regulated professions add the professional body, title and rules; licensed activities add the supervisory authority.

Your Facebook Page Counts as a Company Web Page

The FPS Economy treats a business social media page the same way it treats a website, which means the same identification obligations follow you onto platforms that give you nowhere sensible to put them. There is no clean answer to that, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest — the platforms simply were not built for it. The workable approach is to carry business name, phone, email and website link on every business social profile, and keep the full set on the site itself where you control the footer.

Belgium Transposed the EAA Through Fourteen Separate Instruments

The federal and community division of powers means the European Accessibility Act arrived in Belgian law through roughly fourteen different laws and decrees rather than one act, with the Code of Economic Law and the Electronic Communications Act among the texts amended. The FPS Economy is the enforcement body and published guidelines for accessible e-commerce services on 27 June 2025, the day before the obligations took effect. Fair to note the other side: with the micro-enterprise exemption at fewer than ten employees and €2 million, a large share of Belgian SMEs sit outside the EAA’s service requirements altogether. Being outside it does not make an unusable checkout a good idea, but it does change how urgent the question is.

Three Language Communities, One Build Decision

A Belgian business serving the whole country is working across Dutch, French and German-speaking markets, and that shapes architecture more than any regulation on this page. Language routing, URL structure, which content genuinely needs translating versus which can stay in one language, and whether the site keeps three versions in sync or lets two of them rot — those get decided at the start of a design project or they get decided badly later. It is the same structural problem faced by businesses selling into France or the Netherlands from here, which is most of them.

FAQ

Questions, Answered Directly

Company name as registered in the KBO, establishment address, contact details, ondernemingsnummer and VAT number where applicable. Companies also give legal form, registered office and the competent enterprise court; regulated professions give the professional body, title and rules.

A contact form is acceptable provided it genuinely works and you communicate clearly and promptly through it. A form that silently fails or goes to an unmonitored inbox does not meet the requirement.

Yes. The FPS Economy is explicit that the obligations apply to vrije beroepen as well as to companies.

If you have fewer than ten employees and turnover or a balance-sheet total at or below €2 million, the service requirements generally do not reach you — which covers a large proportion of Belgian SMEs. Products are treated separately. This is background information rather than legal advice.
