How this
service works

Fifty Milliseconds, and the Research Is Older Than You Think

The finding everyone quotes comes from Lindgaard, Fernandes, Dudek and Brown, published in Behaviour & Information Technology in 2006 under the title "Attention web designers: You have 50 milliseconds to make a good first impression". Participants rated the visual appeal of homepages shown for 500 milliseconds, then again at 50 milliseconds, and the ratings correlated closely between the two. Twenty years on, nobody has meaningfully overturned it. A visitor forms a view of your site before reading a word, and everything you wrote is being read through that view.

The Number You Have Been Quoted Is Probably Wrong

You will see "75% of consumers judge a company’s credibility by its website design, according to Stanford" almost everywhere in web-design marketing. The actual Stanford Web Credibility Project figure is different. Across 2,684 participants assessing sites in ten subject areas, 46.1% justified their credibility judgement on the basis of visual design — layout, typography, font size, colour scheme — which put design ahead of content and ahead of function as the most common reason given. That is a strong finding on its own and it does not need inflating. We would rather quote it correctly than repeat the version that sells better.

The Halo Effect Is the Part That Actually Matters Commercially

Lindgaard’s work points at something more useful than the speed of the judgement: what it does afterwards. A strong first impression makes people generous about problems they meet later — small errors get overlooked rather than compounded. Separate research into aesthetics and credibility found that identical content presented with a higher level of aesthetic treatment was judged more credible, and Nielsen Norman Group’s work on the aesthetic-usability effect finds attractive interfaces are perceived as easier to use even where they objectively are not. Design is not decoration on top of the argument. It is the frame the argument is read inside.

Accessible at Design Time Costs a Fraction of Accessible Later

This is a design decision more than a development one, and it is where the money is. Published 2026 analysis puts remediating an existing site at two-and-a-half to four times the cost of building accessibly from the start, with the median small business needing somewhere between $4,200 and $8,500 to reach WCAG 2.2 AA from a standing start. Almost all of that is decisions a designer makes in the first week: contrast in the brand palette, real labels rather than placeholder text, a focus state that is visible, tap targets sized for a thumb. None of it constrains how the site looks. It only constrains how carelessly it can be drawn, and the accessibility page covers what the rules actually require.

What Custom Design Buys You Over a Template

A template is a set of decisions someone else made for a different business. It works when your business happens to look like their assumption and quietly fights you when it does not — the wrong things get prominence, the enquiry path bends around a layout it was not built for, and every fix is a workaround. Custom design starts from what you actually sell and who is buying it — the same reasoning that shapes our business website builds. It is also where performance is decided, because a design carrying four typefaces, six hero images and a slider is a slow page before anyone writes a line of code. That is the real argument for restraint, more than any aesthetic preference.

FAQ

Questions, Answered Directly

If your business is genuinely generic, a good template will serve. Most are not. The cost of a template shows up later as workarounds — content that does not fit the slots, an enquiry path bent around someone else’s assumptions, and speed problems baked into a theme you cannot strip down.

More than most owners expect. The Stanford Web Credibility Project found visual design was the single most common reason participants gave for their credibility judgement, cited by 46.1% and ranking above content. That is a research finding rather than a sales line.

No. We design the website around brand assets you already have. If you do not have any, that is worth resolving with a brand designer first, because a site built around a placeholder identity tends to need redoing once the real one arrives.

Design review and revision rounds are included, and the exact number is set out in your quote rather than left vague. What we ask in return is consolidated feedback from one decision-maker, because the projects that stall are almost always the ones with contradictory notes from four people.

WebBizora custom web design starts at $1,199 as a one-time cost and covers a bespoke responsive design built around the business rather than adapted from a template, with full ownership of the finished site transferring on final payment.

Maintenance plans

Published 2026 guides put small business maintenance at roughly $50–$150 a month for basic cover, $150–$400 for a standard plan and $400–$1,000+ for full service, with ad-hoc freelancer work at $50–$150 an hour. That last figure is the one worth holding onto: ten small changes billed hourly costs more than a year of Essential Care. Plans are monthly, there is no minimum term, and hosting stays in your name throughout.
